Injured veterinarian needs overseas treatment

Dear Editor,

My son, Dr RS Storm, is one of the vets who was involved in the accident at Lethem (Devil’s Hill) reported in your newspaper on October 4, 2006. He sustained two badly broken bones (fractured right distal tibia and fibia) and other injuries. He had surgeries, the last of which was in early August, 2007, however, the level of recovery was disappointing and he still uses crutches.

He has solicited assistance from the government through the Ministry of Agriculture to go overseas where treatment is available, since the attending surgeon has concluded nothing further can be done in Guyana. Our many efforts and interviews with administrative and ministerial heads (Ministries of Agriculture and Health) have not borne fruit to date. Action through the unions and NIS is being explored.

I wish to highlight this matter for public support in imparting the urgency of his surgical needs, so he can become fully mobile for his duties. I am trusting this will give impetus to those with whom we have been consulting so the groundwork for medical attention abroad can be laid.

Yours faithfully,
(Name and address provided)
