Duo remanded over theft of minibus

Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle on Thursday remanded two men who allegedly stole a minibus worth $1.2 million.

Christopher Texeira, 31, of 725 North Sophia and George Lewis, 28, of 3514 North Ruimveldt pleaded not guilty when the simple larceny charge was read to them at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
It is alleged that on July 13 at Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo the men stole a minibus owned by Indranie.

The men’s attorney told the court that they did not steal the minibus. He explained that Texeira and Lewis were employed by another person to collect the bus from the virtual complainant (VC) who handed the vehicle’s key to the men. It was further noted by the attorney that the bus was recovered and is lodged at the Leonora Police Station. However, the prosecution said that prior to the incident the driver of the minibus had reported that he was stuck up and robbed of a quantity of items, including the bus key. The prosecution also objected to the defence’s application for bail stating that, if released, the men would interfere with the VC who is already fearful for her life. Texeira and Lewis were subsequently refused bail and the matter transferred to the Leonora Magistrate’s Court for August 26.
