Homeless man found dead at East Street

The body of a man, who according to reports was destitute, was yesterday morning discovered outside a building at the corner of East and New Market streets, with a wound to his face.

The area where the man was found is one that is usually occupied by homeless people. When this newspaper went there yesterday, several were asleep on the concrete sidewalk; two of them were covered from head to toe with pieces of cardboard.

They were lying on the concrete pavement on the southern side of the building.

Reports reaching Stabroek News are that the man was found just after nine yesterday morning on the concrete pavement, but on the eastern side of the building, facing East Street. He was lying on his back.

A man who operates a small snackette a short distance from where the body was discovered said he did not see anything and was unaware that a dead body had been lying there earlier in the morning.

Sources told this newspaper that there was a stench coming from the body and that the right side of the face “was bashed in”.

The body is at Lyken’s Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.
