Roads, schools among works completed in Region 6

The Region Six Regional Democratic Council (RDC) says it has undertaken a number of developmental works some of which are complete and others are in progress.

The RDC met recently to receive updates on road works, housing and water issues among others. The meeting heard that a number of roads in the region are about 60% complete and as regard drainage and irrigation the Borlam sluice and outfall have been completed while other irrigation works are ongoing.

The meeting was also told that the bridges in the region are almost halfway completed while the All Saints Primary School is 95% completed and the Port Mourant Primary is about 80% completed. The Region is also procuring school furniture to the tune of $8.1M which will be distributed throughout the academic year. The RDC said too the Black Bush Polder hospital is about 75% completed as the Fyrish and Number 53 Health Centre are 85% complete.

For the 170th Emancipation anniversary the RDC donated $10,000 each to five communities and provided other assistance to help celebrate the Day.

It said too work is progressing at the Albion Sports Complex in preparation for Carifesta X for which the roster includes a youth village, a visual arts and book display and a “massive” concert. The release said too the Regional Rights of the Child Committee has renewed its collaboration with the National Commission and it plans to host a panel discussion on issues relating to the rights of children on the National Commu-nication Network.

Meanwhile, the education committee said that it has been very successful at the National Grade Six Assessment and efforts are being made to improve the standard of education in the Region. The committee is also addressing the issue of contingency fees being paid to schools.

Also, the Culture, Youth and Sport Committee hosted a number of activities in the region during June and July. The committee had also visited schools, completed the YEST recruitment, met with parents to discuss summer camps and engaged in volunteer training for Carifesta X.
