Police Commissioner, Henry Greene said yesterday that a suspect was arrested in connection with the loaded gun that was found on a Camp prisoner on Friday but has denied throwing the weapon over the prison wall.
Speaking to reporters following the conclusion of the Carifesta security briefing at Eve Leary yesterday, he said that investigations are continuing into the discovery.
According to the Commissioner, information so far suggested that the items were thrown over the prison fence and a prisoner picked it up as part of an arrangement but he was caught by a prison officer before he could have handed it to anyone.
He said that some prisoners were questioned but they have all denied involvement and so has the suspect who is a known character with several pending matters in court.
The prisoner who was found with the weapon, Greene said is serving a larceny sentence.
Further, he confirmed that several prisoners were removed from the prison and questioned.
A police press release on Friday said that prison officers at the Georgetown Prisons discovered an inmate with a .38 revolver and eight matching rounds of ammunition in his possession.
The discovery was made at approximately 3 pm and the prison authorities called in the police and a search of the entire complex was conducted. During the search, ganja and a quantity of sharpened implements were discovered.
Several prisoners, the release further stated, were questioned and security was heightened in and around the prisons.
Shortly after the discovery was made the immediate area around the prisons was cordoned off and barriers were set up.
The discovery immediately raised fresh concerns about security at the facility and questions about how a gun and ammunition could get past prison security and end up in the hands of an inmate. Since the 2002 jail-break when five inmates made a bloody escape after seizing a firearm there have been intense concerns about security.
