Businessman shot in leg by gunmen in passing car

A 34-year-old businessman was shot in the leg early yesterday morning when several gunmen in a car opened fire on him at he rode his motor cycle along the Plaisance Public Road.

Hospital sources said yesterday that the injured man, Mark Dean of Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara (ECD) took his own discharge after receiving treatment at the institution.

Reports reaching Stabroek News are that Dean had earlier left a drinking spot at Better Hope, ECD, and was heading home when in the Plaisance area men in an approaching car opened fire on him.

One of the three shots fired hit the businessman just above his right ankle. He arrived at the Georgetown Hospital at 2.24 am and after receiving treatment was admitted to the open ward.

The man, according to hospital sources, refused to be admitted and took his own discharge.
This newspaper has learnt that the shooting may have stemmed from an incident in June during which Dean was robbed of some valuables.

Up to press time last night, no one had been held in connection with the incident.
This is the second businessman in the space of two weeks who has been shot and wounded by unknown gunmen.
On August 7 around 10.50 pm, three gunmen opened fire on Mohamed Baksh as he was about to park his car under his Lamaha Street home.

The man sustained several gunshot wounds and was admitted as a patient of the High Dependency Unit (HDU) of the Georgetown Hospital after undergoing emergency surgery.

One of his relatives had told this newspaper that nothing had been taken by the men who subsequently escaped, and that there was no motive for the attack as Baksh had no known problems with anyone.
