The Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) yesterday an-nounced that its network has suffered from several “acts of sabotage” over the past 24 hours, affecting the national telecommunication infrastructure and the police have since launched an investigation.
According to GT&T the acts have resulted in disruption of service in Croal Street, Sendall Place, Hadfield Street, Charles-town and Lacytown. The company said it has had to deploy emergency crews to restore services.
“The acts coming on the eve of Guyana’s hosting of the 10th Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA) are either calculated to disrupt the execution of the many activities associated with the hosting of such a major activity or to compromise national security.”
The company appealed to all public-spirited citizens to be on the alert for those intent on carrying out such acts and to report any suspicions activities to the security forces and to the company on telephone numbers 0908 and 226-2764.
Meanwhile, the police in a release said that 600 pairs of cables belonging to the company behind the Brickdam Cathedral were cut and stolen while the telephone cabinet at Regent and Wellington streets was also vandalised and several telephone wires within the cabinet were destroyed.
The police said they have since launched an investigation into the destruction and larceny and what appear to be acts of sabotage. “These acts seem intended to disrupt proceedings during Carifesta and will not be tolerated.
Special patrols have been implemented to deter and detect persons engaging in these acts,” the police said.
