No deaths in Essequibo river mishap – Iwokrama

No one died in the boat mishap in the Essequibo River last Sunday as was stated in a Guyana Police Press release on Monday.

The police release had stated that Lionel Williams had died and that three other men were missing.

However, Public Communications & Outreach Coordinator of Iwokrama International Centre, Annalise Bayney, said in a press release yesterday that while there was a “minor boat incident” involving three men in a canoe and a miner’s boat from Siparuni, no one died. She said that the miner’s boat hit the canoe and sped away from the scene.

And while Williams was one of the occupants in the boat, he escaped with just a minor bump on his head and was back to his routine activities. The other occupants of the canoe escaped unhurt.

Contacted yesterday, Police Public Relation officer, Superintendent John Sauers, confirmed that no one perished in the boat incident. He noted that the release had stated that a team of police officers had gone into the area to investigate. He said the release was based on the information received by police in the area but it took some time for them to travel in to the area because of the terrain.
