Action packed weekend for cyclists

– Over $250,000 up for grabs in  three-stage Macedo Memorial race

Cyclists will pedalling away with fury this week-end when the National Sports Commis-sion (NSC) through national cycling coach Hassan Mohammed holds its cycling programme around the inner circuit of the National Park Saturday morning.

Director of the NSC, Neil Kumar, is expected to distribute the prizes to the respective winners at the end of the 11-race programme which will feature the cyclists who participated in the ‘Teach them Young’ programme as well as celebrate Amerindian Heritage month.

And in the afternoon, cyclists will be outside the Ocean View Hotel for an individual time trial at 16:00hrs when the ‘Race of truth’ will commence.

The three-stage race is being held in honour of the late Victor Macedo, a former cycling enthusiast, whose son Floyd was an active cyclist.
The route for this time trial will see the cyclists proceeding from Ocean View Hotel to Sparendaam Police Station and back to the starting line for the finish.

The second race which takes place the following morning, Sunday, will also pedal off from Ocean View Hotel at  07:30hrs and proceed to the village of Perseverance, Mahaicony where they will turn and make their downward journey to Ocean View for the finish.

They will be back in their saddles on Sunday afternoon for a 12-lap Criterium race around the outer circuit of the National Park to culminate the three-stage event organized by the Flying Stars Cycling Club.
This race will commence in front of Macedo’s residence on Peter Rose Street, turn right into Lance Gibbs Street, left into Irving, proceed north to Carifesta Avenue, turn left into Carifesta Avenue, left onto Camp Road, left onto Thomas Lands and proceed around the outer circuit of the National Park 12 times.

Over $250,000 in prizes will be at stake in the three-stage race with the first three finishers in each stage receiving prizes, while the first finisher in the veterans and junior categories will also receive prizes.

The first seven finishers overall at the end of the 12-lap Criterium race as well as the first three veterans and junior finishers respectively, will receive cash prizes and  the overall winner will be rewarded with the Victor Macedo Memorial trophy.

A tough battle can be anticipated this weekend with the inform Alonzo Greaves who has been dominating this sports discipline over the past month being hard pressed by several keen rivals.

Defending champion Geron Williams along with Marlon Williams and Warren Mc Kay are at present in Trinidad and Tobago and according to a Guyana Cycling Federation official their participation in this event is yet unknown.
Greaves’ competitors will include John Charles, Robin Persaud, Tyrone Hamilton, Junior Niles, Jaikarran Sukhai, Leer Nunes and Darren Allen, just to name a few in the senior category, while veterans Ian ‘Dumb Boy’ Jackson, Linden Blackman, Kennard Lovell and Compton Persaud will also have their own fierce  rivalry.
