No report yet on Malaysian’s death

The Jailing forestry company is now in breach of the Laws of Guyana, since it has not officially reported the death of one of its employees at its interior operations to the Ministry of Labour, Minister Manzoor Nadir says.

The Minister told Stabroek News last evening that in matters such as these where an industrial death occurs the onus is on the company to immediately report the death to the Ministry.

Nadir said that his ministry however made contact with the company but was told that management was in a board meeting at the time; however no contact was made with the ministry by anyone from the company since then.

He added other companies that have been in similar breach of the law have been prosecuted.

Stabroek News has also attempted to elicit information from the company on the death to no avail.

Hep Kai Kan, a 60-year-old Malaysian national died at M2 Backdam North West District after a tree that was cut by a chainsaw operator fell on him. Kai Kan was pronounced dead on arrival at the Port Kaituma Hospital.

Stabroek News made contact with the Georgetown Office of the Company but officials there have been tightlipped on the matter.

The Assistant CEO of the Company refused to comment on the issue and said that he cannot “amplify” on anything.

Meanwhile a press release had said that the police are investigating the death of Kai Kan, a production manager with the company.
