Theophilus King, 34, a farmer of Shirley Field Ridley Square, Industrial Site, was not required to plead to the capital crime when it was read to him by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.

It is alleged that on September 22 in Georgetown King murdered Desmond Davis, also known as ‘Lion’.

The matter was transferred to Court Three where the Preliminary Inquiry will begin on October 17.

Police had said in a press release on Tuesday that the body of the 38-year-old businessman was discovered in an alleyway on Mandela Avenue around 7:20 pm.

Investigations had reveal-ed that Davis was involved in an argument with another man when he was alleged to have been fatally stabbed. Further, the release had said, a suspect had been arrested and was in police custody.

Davis was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital and had suffered deep stab wounds to the region of his heart and other areas of his body.

Stabroek News was told that sometime after 7 pm, an argument erupted between Davis and another man. No one could say what the men were arguing about but Davis reportedly went home, armed himself with a cutlass and went back to the scene.

Persons who claimed to have witnessed the incident said Davis found the man and started advancing with the weapon. According to the eyewitnesses, what happened next was hard to determine because a power outage hit the area. One of the eyewitnesses said that the man who Davis approached might have been assisted by a friend and the two overpowered him. The eyewitness said that Davis’s cutlass was used to inflict the injuries he suffered.

Details of what transpired after Davis was stabbed are sketchy as various persons offered disjointed accounts, but what was clear was that no one ventured into the alley for a while after Davis was stabbed.

When this newspaper visited the area on Tuesday residents were still in shock and there was talk that two persons were involved in the attack. A woman close to the dead man said that she saw at least four stab wounds while another resident said that the man had sustained many stabs to his back.
