Lodge residents charged over Corentyne robbery bid

Two Lodge residents yesterday appeared in the Springlands Magistrate’s Court jointly charged with unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition and assault with intent to commit robbery.

Orin Brown and Shane Jones pleaded not guilty to the three charges when they were read to them by Principal Magistrate Krishndat Persaud. They were later remanded to prison until next Thursday.

The arrest of the duo came on Tuesday morning following a police chase that began at a home at No. 76 Village Corentyne where the men were allegedly attempting to carry out a robbery and ended on the No. 74 Village beach.

Police in a press release said that about 5.30 am, Sookdeo Mitho, 63, and his wife, Somattie Mitho, 61, were attacked at their No. 76 Village, Corentyne home by three men, two of whom were armed with guns.

The men had entered the house through an open door and held the couple by their necks. When the woman screamed, the men released the couple and made good their escape.

Police followed up on the report and with help from the community policing group found the three men suspected of carrying out the attack along the beach at No. 74 Village, Corentyne.

The men reportedly opened fire on the police, who engaged them. Two of the men were subsequently arrested and an unlicensed .32 semi automatic pistol and a matching round were recovered while the third escaped.   The men arrested gave their addresses as Princes Street and Hill Street in Georgetown.
