New CANU Head appointed

Three months after Orville Nedd was fired from his post as acting head of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU), the Minister of Home Affairs last evening announced his replacement.

According to the Ministry, James G Singh who was the successful candidate out of a number of persons who applied took up his new post on Wednesday.

Speaking on his qualifications, a press release from the Ministry last evening said that Singh has a Diploma in Public Safety and Security Management from the University of Guyana, an International Diploma in Business Management – Cambridge International College and a Diploma in Electronics Engineering from the De Vry Institute of Technology, Toronto, Canada.

Some of his responsibilities will be to control the operations of CANU according to the Laws of Guyana, relevant policies, procedures and standard operational procedures laid down by the Administration and he will be subject to the general guidance of the Minister of Home Affairs.

During the latter part of May nine officers, including acting head Nedd, received letters informing them that they had failed their polygraph tests and asking them to submit in writing the reason/s for this. This newspaper later learnt that the officials had not provided satisfactory explanations.

Minister Clement Rohee later confirmed that the officers would be fired.
