Dumbing down

Dear Editor,

The decision by John McCain to pick Sarah Palin as his vice-presidential running mate is not a laughing matter and can be described as the most appalling and dreadful decision made during an electoral campaign.

What makes this entire situation startling and incredulous is that a high percentage of Americans believe that she is fit to be president and many are impressed by her likeability and their ability to identify similarity in their lives with hers!

Are you kidding me! Here is a woman who believes that all it takes for one to have foreign policy experience is to be in charge of a state or city that has a foreign neighbour which can be seen if you look out the window.

Equally damning was her inability in a recent CBS interview to name another Supreme Court decision she disagreed with other than Roe vs Wade and she could not cite a single publication that she reads to keep abreast of foreign policy issues. Is this what the highest offices in the US (and by extension the world) have been reduced to? This represents an alarming trend, starting with the election of George Bush Jr, of dumbing down the offices of the president and the vice-president.

We (the US and the world) are all now living through the disastrous consequences of such boneheaded decision-making.

One would have thought that Americans would resent having an unqualified person to hold such important positions in the future, but it seems as though they have not learned from past mistakes.

Yours faithfully,
Clinton Urling
