– Family lauds support
Scores of basketball players and friends of the late Kevin Worrell turned up on Monday evening at the Burnham Basketball Court to pay their respects to the 21-year-old former Courts Pacesetters player.
Worrell, who was playing in the third game of the GABA one-day knockout tournament against the Maccabees Club, collapsed and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the George-town Public Hospital.
The circumstance surrounding his death is not yet known but a post mortem was to be performed yesterday.
The Georgetown Basket-ball Association (GABA) along with the Courts Pacesetters and Courts Guyana Inc. will be sponsoring the nightly vigil at the Burnham Court.
On Monday evening which was the first night of the vigil, emotions were very high and family members, who were present, were deeply touched at the support given by the basketball fraternity.
His mother Rhonda Johnson was visibly emotional all night as stories of how the young player died were being retold.
President of the GABA, Trevor Rose said that while it was encouraging to see persons coming out to show support to the player, he was still deeply touched as Worrell and himself were close and had played for the same club.
Worrell was described by all as one of the most disciplined players of the Courts Basketball Club and was a team player in every way.
Persons also spoke of how he would always call to say if he would be late for practice or for any team event.
He was respected by all members of the club.
Prior to his death he last competed against the Victory Valley Royals in Linden as his coach Bobby Cadogan was grooming him to make the transition from the second division to the first.
Cadogan said that Worrell would surely be missed.
The candlelight vigil will run every night until Worrell is buried though a date for the funeral has not yet been set.
