$90M water contracts signed

GWI yesterday signed contracts worth $90M with nine construction companies to facilitate thirteen water improvement projects.
The companies were C&S Construction, Olani Husbands, Yunas Civil and Building Construction Services, Rudolph Kissoon, Azzem Hussain Bacchus, CB General Contracting Services, Macsood Ahamad, Faldhari Singh & Sons and Eddie’s Bobcat, Excavator and Construction Services.

Chief Executive of GWI, Karan Singh stated that the contractors will be under close watch since GWI has stopped being negligent in this regard. According to him, GWI has been accepting sub-standard work from various companies for too long and intends to put a stop to this.  Singh said that the contractors must adhere to their contractual obligations and this includes finishing their jobs properly and not leaving any damaged roads.

Singh also revealed that GWI had recently terminated the services of a company that was tardy in completing its work. Harripersaud Company Ltd. was doing repair work to the Shelter Belt on Vlissengen Road when it had its contract terminated. According to Singh, GWI will be approaching the company that placed second in the bidding process and will be negotiating with that organisation to have it continue the project. The project is about 85% completed. Singh also added that Harripersaud Company Ltd has been blacklisted by the water company.

The contracts awarded included the upgrading of
service connections at Friendship, Vigilance, Mahaica to Spring Hall, Bladen Hall and Strathspey on the East Coast of Demerara, and at Diamond/Grove on the East Bank of Demerara.  Other contracts involved the installation of water meters in some areas on the East Bank and on the Corentyne.   Meanwhile, other contracts were handed out to upgrade the transmission line in McKenzie Linden and to install a transmission Main in Amelia’s Ward, Linden.
