Bio-sand filters to treat water in Ituni

The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) is donating ten bio-sand filters to Ituni, Region Ten to treat contaminated and unsafe water.
The Government Information Agency (GINA) quoted GWI Scientific Services Manager Savitri Jetoo as saying that the introduction of bio-sand filters to the region will improve the quality of water. The filters will remove organic contaminants including bacteria and particles which can cause illnesses such as diarrhoea

Jetoo noted that Region Ten (Upper Demerara–Upper Berbice) was chosen because residents use water from the creek which may be highly contaminated, for household purposes.

The filtered water will be 98% bacteriologically safe while turbidity, discolouration, odour and unpleasant taste will be reduced and the water will be safe for drinking and other household purposes.

The equipment is cost effective and a sustainable means of treating water, she added.
