Everest Hikers all but assured of championship trophy

Fresh from the recent indoor success, Old Fort first division men’s team have now become the dominant force in the current Banks DIH Night Hockey tournament at Thirst Park.

The South Ruimveldt based team shocked the Everest Hikers supporters Thursday evening with a 4-0 drubbing of the previously undefeated pool leaders.

With Ascofu Simon in top form, Old Fort overcame the evenly balanced first 15 minutes of the match with Simon’s first goal of his hat-trick coming from a Jonathan Roberts’ assist 20 minutes into the game.
Old Fort resumed the second half in like manner with Simon deflecting a second goal past Hikers’ goalkeeper Jason Hoyte two minutes into the half and a third in the 46th minute.

Roberts then made his own mark when he received a long aerial pass before slotting the ball comfortably past the advancing goalkeeper.

The second division sides had battled to a 1-1 draw earlier in the evening as prolific goal scorer Teon Joaquin scored in the 13th minute for Old Fort but Andrew Stewart equalised for Everest just two minutes later.

The result of this match has elevated the two teams to top of the pool and set up a rematch in the second division final which took place yesterday.

Georgetown Cricket Club first division men’s team  made light work of Shakatan in a repeat of their first round duel by doling out a 3-0 beating on the youngsters.

Alan Fernandes recorded a double and Patrick Edghill the other goal for GCC.

The Western Dragons earned their first points of the competition in their last pool match against the lone female team in the competition, GCC Tigers.

The Tigers struck first through a blistering shot by Brennette Gordon in the 16th minute but the Dragons pace was too much for the ladies as Jermaine Austin and Deon Carew slammed in one each to pull off  a 2-1 victory.

In the first division competition, the Everest Hikers lead the table with 12 points followed by Old Fort with 10, GCC with seven  and Shakatan who are without a point.

Everest have all but secured the trophy as it would require an unlikely victory by cellar-dwellers Shakatan against them along with an Old Fort victory over GCC to propel Old Fort onto the winners podium.

At the end of the second division pool round, Old Fort tops the table with 10 points followed by Everest – eight, Carib Degenerates – seven, Western Dragons – three and GCC Tigers – nil.  Old Fort and the Everest Hikers will clash in the final of this competition.

The final night of matches was scheduled for last evening with the second division final followed by a ladies exhibition game.

Hikers were also to meet Shakatan while  GCC were down to battle with  Old Fort in first division matches.
