The New Amsterdam United Football (NAUF) has teamed up with a number of football enthusiasts in the Berbice area to arrange fundraising activities to meet heart surgery expenses for Seon Springer.
Springer, who represented Berbice on a number of occasions as a central defender and is also assistant coach of the NAUF, has a heart condition and is in need of emergency open heart surgery overseas.
The 23-year-old who resides at Tucber Park, New Amsterdam was a former student of the New Amsterdam Multilateral School and the New Amsterdam Technical Institute and is one of the founding members of the club and also a competent basketball player.
He suffered a heart attack and lost consciousness while playing a game of basketball on 24th May this year in Georgetown. He was rushed to the Georgetown Hospital and subsequently the Balwant Singh Hospital where he was placed in intensive care for over a week.
Subsequent visits to the Caribbean Heart Institute recommended that further tests be undertaken overseas and he has since visited Barbados where he was examined by heart specialists Drs. Massay and Anthony Harris and diagnosed to be suffering from a leaking aorta valve which is causing an enlargement of the heart.
It has since been decided that he needs emergency open heart surgery which is scheduled to be performed on 7th November at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Barbados at a cost of over $3.5 million.
The club in collaboration with the family has since decided to undertake a number of fundraising ventures to help offset the hefty cost.
The first such activity which is a five-a-side football competition, fun day and lime will be held on Sunday, 26th October at the All Saints Scotts Church ground, commencing at 10:00hrs. Bar–b-que will also be served while a raffle will be drawn as part of the fundraising activities.
