Diamond Mineral Water 50-miler pedals off Sunday

It’s back to the road for local cyclists  when the ninth annual Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) Diamond Mineral Water sponsored 50-mile cycle road race pedals off at 9:00 am this Sunday from Wales Police Station to Bushy Park and back to Demerara Harbour Bridge for the finish.
Defending champion Alonzo Greaves will be looking for some redemption on the road, having won last year’s event in a time of 2hrs: 59.95s, but in order to do so he will have to stave off a stern test from Junior Niles who will be brimming with confidence, having won the second annual Ministry of Health (MOH)/ Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) sponsored Ride for Life 2.
Add Robin Persaud, Tyrone Hamilton, Tony Simon, Geron Williams, Christopher Holder, Ian ‘Dumb Boy’ Jackson, Raymond Newton and Darren Allen to the fray, and certainly both Greaves and Niles will be hard pressed to maintain their supremacy over the field.
Meanwhile the junior and juvenile cyclists will pedal off from the Wales Police station and the veterans and upright wheelers will get underway from in front of the Uitvlugt Community Centre.
Prizes will be up for grabs for the first six finishers, while the first three finishers in the junior, veteran and upright categories will be rewarded.  There will also be eight prime prizes up for grabs during the course of the race.
A representative of the sponsors will be on hand to start the race and assist with the presentation of prizes.
