Representatives of six secondary schools in Georgetown braved the torrential downpour on Wednesday to make presentations at an event commemorating International Human Rights Day, 2008.
The event which was held at the National Library Auditorium was jointly sponsored by Rights of Children (ROC) and the Guyana Human Rights Association (GHRA), a press release stated.
Each school presenter chose to speak on the right they considered most important to children. According to the release, Felicia Haynes of St. Stanislaus College chose Freedom of Opinion, Reanna Clark of Marian Academy and Nekiza Blake of Kingston Secondary opted for Freedom of Expression, Stacy Gordon of St. Joseph’s elected to speak on Child Abuse, and Jomo Paul of Christ Church Secondary spoke on Parental Responsibility while Keisha Nelson of Brickdam Secondary selected The Right to Education.
All of the presentations were well received, the release added.
Presentations were interspersed with short video presentations of public service announcements on human rights and child rights themes, including PSAs produced by ROCers themselves and others made by young people in other countries.
ROC also presented each speaker with small educational gifts as a token of appreciation.
And to mark the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights each person attending the event was given a copy, the release added.
