The activity was initiated by Camille Reid; secretary to the Mayor, Merlyn Henry; Town Clerk (acting) and another staffer, Angelina Collins for the children to feel special.

Reid told Stabroek News that members of staff contributed toys while letters were sent out to businesspersons for their assistance and they have responded positively. She said they would also welcome more gifts from members of the public “towards this good cause.”
She said since this is their first year they “plan to do it small and from next year it would be big.”

Another reason for coming up with the idea, she said was because the “town council is not doing good financially and we hope that through this the council would be successful from next year.”

She pointed out too that, “As it is we have not gotten our salary as yet and we cannot do our personal shopping nor for our families and homes.”
Reid told this newspaper that the reason for that is because quite a few people have outstanding taxes to pay and that is also preventing the council from undertaking community work.
