At the Weldaad Court on Thursday, Magistrate Tejnarine Ramroop sentenced an unemployed man to 10 years imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to two counts of break and enter and larceny.
Andrew `Suffa’ Phillips of Murphy Dam, Rosignol, West Berbice will serve five years for each offence and the sentences run concurrently.
The court heard that Phillips broke into the dwelling of Sasenarine Singh on January 21 at Rosignol and stole one DVD player valued $20,000, a Motorola Razr cellular phone worth $37,000 and a wristwatch costing $35,000, a total value of $60,500.
Phillips also admitted to breaking into the dwelling of Harvey Tambron also of Rosignol between January 5 and 6 and carting off a quantity of kitchen utensils, groceries, ornaments and clothing, three bedsheet sets, one 20″ television, an Avon set and one 300-watt transformer among other items totalling $104,200.
After the charges were read to him, Phillips told Magistrate Ramroop that he would plead guilty because he did not want to “waste the court’s time.”
He then begged the magistrate to give him a “small sentence” and even asked for it to run concurrently.
Phillips, who said he had served prison time in the past, told the magistrate “thank you sir” before being whisked away to serve his time.
