Four years for ganja trafficking

A labourer who admitted to a charge of trafficking in narcotics was sentenced to four years imprisonment when he appeared before Magistrate Geeta Chandan Persid-Edmond at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

The court heard that on February 27 at 9 pm, Shaheed Hussain, 34, a labourer of New Amsterdam had in his possession 24.5 grammes of cannabis sativa for the purpose of trafficking.

In presenting the facts, police prosecutor, corporal Phillip Sheriff said that the defendant was walking along Matthew Allen Road when police saw him acting in a suspicious manner.

He was stopped and searched and the drug was found in his pants pocket.

He was subsequently taken to the Central Police Station, NA and the drug was weighed in his presence.

Before the sentence was handed down, Hussain told the magistrate that that was the first time he was before the court and that he was sorry for his actions.
