Three men, including a former policeman, accused of stealing items worth over $4M from their former employer were remanded to prison when they appeared at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Ramtar Ramroop, 26, a former policeman of Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara (WCD), Afraz Hoosein, 22, of Lot 19 Anna Catherina, WCD and Bharrat Shaw, 22, of 142 Leonora ‘C’ Field, WCD were not required to plead to the indictable charge and were remanded to prison by Magistrate Fazil Azeez.
It is alleged that between August 15 and last Monday at De Willem, WCD, the trio stole 30 amplifiers valued at $3, 223,000, speakers worth $301 000, five pairs of car speakers valued at $174,000, seven portable DVD players worth $280,000, six DVD players valued at $120,000, six pairs of car horns worth $24,000, and five cordless telephones valued at $60,000 with a total value of $4,182,000, the property of Imran Hussein called `Wolf’.
Attorney-at-law Nandine Ramkumar entered an appearance for Ramroop. In a bail application, the attorney stated that her client is 26-years-old, married with two children, is a taxi-driver, is the sole breadwinner for his family and had no previous convictions. She said that he was a former policeman and it was stated that he left the force two years ago.
She asked that reasonable bail be granted.
The numbers two and three accused were not represented by counsel. Hoosein told the court that he was 22-years-old, lived at Anna Catherina with his parents, and is unemployed but previously work with `Wolf’. Shaw also revealed that he also once worked for ‘Wolf’. He stated that he lived with his mother. The trio was remanded to prison.
Meanwhile, in a related matter, a 15-year-old boy was charged with receiving stolen property. After listening to his explanation the magistrate entered a plea of not guilty and placed the teen on $50,000 bail. It is alleged that on September 25 at Anna Catherina, the minor received from Hoosein, a portable DVD player valued $30,000, knowing same to be stolen or unlawfully obtained from Imran Hussain.
The teen had told the court that he lived with his grandfather and did not go to school. He stated that he purchased the DVD player from Hoosein for $30,000.
He said that he worked at a shop in Cornelia Ida. The court was told that the DVD player was recovered and is lodged with the police.
The matters were set for November 4 at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.
