A 22-year-old taxi driver was on Wednesday remanded to prison after he was charged with robbing a Crane, West Coast Demerara (WCD) businessman of twelve gold chains worth $1.5M.

The accused, Tarique Manawar Khan of Lot 142 West Ruimveldt, Georgetown appeared before Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court.

He was charged with robbery under arms committed on Ren Persaud, 30.

Khan was not required to plead to the allegation. He was remanded to prison.

The matter was adjourned to May 23rd.

The crime was allegedly committed by three men, two of whom were armed with small handguns.

Another suspect was arrested with Khan but he was not charged. A search is ongoing for the third suspect.

The robbery took place at Riddim Flow Chill Spot located at Crane Housing Scheme, WCD.

The business is owned and operated by Persaud.

The police had said investigations revealed that Persaud was playing pools in the shop when he was approached by the suspects.

The bandits held Persaud at gunpoint and relieved him of the gold chains he was wearing at the time.

They then reportedly discharged two rounds in the air before fleeing  in a waiting car.

The car in which the men escaped, PZZ 3371, was later found abandoned at Barber Shop Street, Crane, WCD, the police said.
