Banks Premium Beer Competition

Just one match remains to find out who are the knockout kings of Georgetown after the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) defeated Alpha United in the semis of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Banks Premium Beer Knockout Competition on Friday at the Tucville Playfield.

The army team defeated Alpha United 2–1 in the last contested semi-final of the tournament and will now battle for top honours against Sunburst Camptown who made it into the final after defeating Fruta Conquerors in the other semi on Sunday.

Defending Champions Alpha United will now meet Fruta Conquerors in the third-place showdown, which will be contested prior to the final with a 6 pm kick off time.

GDF sunk another big ship by playing well composed football as they did against Pele in the quarter-final round taking advantage of little chances along with better constructed plays and carpet-like passing, which gave them the edge in ball possession.

Conventionally, the Alpha United team came out attacking in the opening minutes of the match often approaching the opposition’s goal and got a few shots off at goal before Howard Lowe’s fifteenth-minute strike which got past Akel Clarke who was defending GDF’s uprights.

Alpha then made their first mistake of the match and were pushed on the back foot 27th minutes into the match when a penalty was given against them. Taken by Selwin Isaacs, a low hard kick to the right post was enough to defeat Alpha’s custodian Ronson Williams for the equalizer.

After the resumption of the match, which was poised 1–1 at the stroke of half time, both teams were playing matching football until Alpha began to show signs of discomposure with loose high passes, which diminished their ball control.

The well composed GDF team then pushed a ball up field to Stellon David who successfully gathered it after a challenge, rushed down on Williams and blasted the ball past him to give his team the lead in the 77th minute.

Alpha then found themselves in need of an equalizer with just over 20 minutes to go in the final half, the few corner kicks and plays that took them into the 18-yard box, seemed threatening for the opposition but none were successful owing to miscued headers and shots.
