Inter Guiana Games 2009

Guyana’s male and female football teams withered to embarrassing defeats at the hands of the French Guiana teams when they contested in the Football Championship of the 42nd Inter Guiana Games on day one at the Ayanganna Ground yesterday.

The home team’s male squad suffered a 2–nil defeat in the match which followed the 7–nil spanking the female team sustained.
In the male match-up the visitors were well composed throughout the entire game while Guyana, often clustered in the field, did not put together good enough passes to trouble the opposition.

Guyana’s body language told a million stories but the one that troubled the most was that they did not look as if they really wanted to win for their country. The defence slackened, midfield clustered and strikers did not support each other which led to their eventual downfall.

Eventual victors, French Guiana opened their game attacking while the home team looked as if they did not know whether they were to defend or attack, opening wide opportunities for the opposition who drew first blood in the 29th minute compliments of an Axel Stanislas strike.

Somehow, Guyana managed to hold off FG from scoring again before half time. When play resumed Guyana did much of the same as in the first half while FG were looking to build on their lead and so they did.

A free kick on the left flank which left Guyana completely clueless found another unmarked FG player who attacked the box and passed it off to Richard Vilbert who made no mistake in lofting it over the custodian and into the back of the net in the 70th minute.

Guyana’s female team, who looked unprepared for the historic match had players following the ball as it moved which led to them being clustered in the field. Selfish playing cost them ball possession.

Led by doubles from Ideme Aissi (5th, 10th), Jessica Godet (21st, 60th), Soriana Constant (41st, 65th) and Ketsia Azevedo’s 48th-minute strike, they steamrolled the Guyanese Girls which was a painful sight for the home crowd but the visitors’ supporters enjoyed every minute of it.
Today both French Guiana teams will be opposed by Suriname at the same venue with a 2 pm kick off time.
