Guyanese competing in the Caribbean Games should go with confidence

Dear Editor,
Many might believe that because Guyana lacks so much in terms of facilities, coaches, etc, in the sporting arena, we will always be at a disadvantage.

However, my support will always continue for those athletic ambassadors who make every effort, are dedicated and showcase clean sportsmanship on behalf of the Golden Arrowhead.

I now say to Alicia Fortune and all the others who will be at the inaugural Caribbean Games 2009 in Trinidad, to go with confidence; they are a force to be reckoned with and no matter what the outcome, should be very proud to contest with Olympians from the Beijing 2008 Games.

As I have said before in previous correspondence, they should not for a moment be intimidated by fellow competitors. In this case I am referring to the famous Jamaicans, Barbadians, Trinidadians and Bahamians.

The funding extended to Alicia fortune by the GDF as reported in the KN is indeed a welcome decision, and I believe it should be an opener for others to follow suit in the future.

Someone else can chip in for the next round, which I believe will be the World Junior Championships 2009 in Italy less than three months from now.

To date I understand there will only be two representatives, namely, Ricardo ‘Quicksilver’ Martin of Lethem and Jenella Jonas. Over to potential business contributors.
Yours faithfully,
T Pemberton
