Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday remanded to prison a 42-year-old father of two who allegedly broke and entered a woman’s nightclub and stole several items valued $1M.
Marc Dannett of Lot 60 Russell Street, Charlestown, pleaded not guilty to the charge of break and enter and larceny when it was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Dannett denied that he broke and entered Irine Gooding’s nightclub and stole three amplifiers and a quantity of alcoholic beverages valued $1M on January 15.
Prosecutor Munilall Seetaram told the court that none of the items was recovered. He also stated that Dannett had been convicted in the past for robbery under arms.
However, Dannett refuted the prosecutor’s statement stating that he was indeed convicted in 2004 but that was for simple larceny and escape from custody charges.
His lawyer then applied for bail for him on the grounds that at the time of the incident, his client was at the Salvation Army Drug Rehab Programme “teaching about the ills of drug abuse”.
Meanwhile Gooding, who was also present in court, stated that she knew Dannett for sometime and had appreciated how he had changed his life after spending some time in prison. She said that she had even welcomed him into her club but was shocked to discover that he had stolen the items mentioned in the charge. She also stated that Dannett was seen by two persons while he was conducting the act.
Seetaram then objected to the bail application on the grounds that if Dannett was released he may continue such acts and he may even flee the jurisdiction.
The magistrate then ordered that Dannett be remanded to prison and that he return to court on May 15.
