Welder killed in Annandale bus smash-up

Welder killed in Annandale bus smash-up 62-year-old man died after the bus that he was in collided with a truck on the Annandale Public Road, East Coast Demerara last night.

Praimchand Chature, a welder of 76 Breda Street, Werk-en-Rust was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital. He had suffered severe head injuries. The driver of the mini-bus, Richard Cockfield, 65, was taken to the x-ray department to have an x-ray done but appeared to have suffered no serious injuries. Two other persons, Sophia Benn, 29, and Brittany Narine, 7, were also taken to the hospital for treatment.

A close relative said that Chature had left his home at around midday to visit a friend in Sophia yesterday. He said that Chature normally rode a motorcycle but left it at the friend and had gone up to Enmore to see a mechanic in the minibus. They were returning when the accident occurred shortly after 7 pm. The bus collided with the truck and was badly damaged to the front.

Chature was reportedly in the front seat of the vehicle. There were reports that the truck was parked on the road. No-one from the truck turned up at the hospital.

At the medical institution last night, several of the man’s relatives turned up and were in tears upon learning of his demise.

Chature was a foreman at Guyana Sawmills and a father of four, another relative said. He leaves to mourn his wife and other relatives.
