‘Zico’ heads LABA

Former national player and national female coach Abdullah ‘Zico’ Hamid is now the head of the Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) after the long-awaited Annual General Meeting (AGM) and elections were held last Sunday at the MacKenzie Sports Club.

‘Zico’ won  against former LABA secretary Joe Chapman hands down with a 20-6 vote and in an invited comment yesterday, the basketball enthusiast told Stabroek Sport that they are ready to get right down to business.

“Well we would be meeting as an executive for the first time tomorrow (today) to look at the first quarter and see how we will work things out…also an under-23 tournament is also in the making which will give us some time to secure sponsorship for our senior league, so it’s right down to work,”  said Hamid.

He also explained that on Thursday, he would be meeting with the past president, Uborn Smith along with Chapman to be brought up to speed with the status of the present LABA league which has been running since last year September.

“The clubs had an issue as it relates to the sponsoring of the first division tournament so I will be meeting with the past president and secretary for them to say to me what is the position with the sponsorship and so on,” Hamid added.

A meeting with the affiliated clubs will then be held on Friday to discus the way forward and most of all the completion of the present league.

Hamid, who has been a prominent figure in the sport over the past 20 years, had presented his slate of executives long before the election was contested and this he said worked well in his favour since his opposition, Joe Chapman, was a lone solider.
