Mother of two denies forging GWI contracts, obtaining $3M

A 34-year-old mother of two of Lot 12 Bagotsville, West Bank Demerara was yesterday placed on $450,000 bail for allegedly forging several Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) contracts from which she illegally obtained $3M.

Samantha David pleaded not guilty to three charges of conspiracy to commit a felony and three charges of committing a misdemeanor when Acting Chief Magis-trate Melissa Robertson read them to her at the George-town Magistrate’s Court.

She was charged along with Linden Strain for whom an arrest warrant was issued.

David denied that between May 1 and December 31, 2006, with intent to defraud, she conspired with others to forge several GWI contracts in favour of an “S. Sparman”.

She also denied that during that period she obtained $3M from the company by using those forged GWI contracts.

Her lawyer Winston Murray applied for bail for her on the grounds that she had been an employee of the company for over 16 years and during that time she had an unblemished record.
He stated that his client was a mother of two and a housewife and she posed no risk of flight.

He said she had lived at her address in Bagotsville for over seven years and will attend court when required.

Murray also noted that David had no previous brushes with the law and she was an upright and law-abiding citizen.

He further stated that his client had resigned from the company about three months before the cases of the forged documents were brought to her attention.

He said that during the time that the alleged forgeries were discovered, the company had interviewed David and had not found any fault with her work.

Murray went on to say that it was very suspicious that his client had been charged three years after the alleged offences were committed.

The prosecution made no objections to the bail application and it was subsequently granted in the sum of $450,000. The case was transferred to Court Six for June 26.
