Beaten woman dies, husband may now face capital charge

A 59-year-old man, initially charged with attempted murder, may now face the capital offence after his reputed wife died at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) on Monday night.

George Gulliver, a tenant of Lot 9 Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara, appeared before the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday charged with attempted murder. It was alleged that last Saturday he attempted to murder his reputed wife, 45-year-old Bibi Fazila Ali.

Police in a press release dated 2 June, 2009 but issued yesterday said Ali died at the GPH at approximately 7 pm on Monday. She had been hospitalized last Saturday following an argument at her home during which she was allegedly assaulted by the accused, police said.

Gulliver was remanded to prison until June 17. Police are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination. A senior police source explained yesterday that the post-mortem result will determine whether the accused will be charged with murder.
