Bramble to lead Guyana U19s

Wicketkeeper Anthony Bramble will lead the Guyana Under-19 team at this year’s regional youth tournament set for Jamaica next month but hopes for a title triumph will rest on the shoulders of the experienced Jonathan Foo and the supporting cast.

The 18-year old Foo is a virtual `veteran’ at the regional U-19 level having represented Guyana on five previous occasions.

He was adjudged the most outstanding player at this year’s Guyana Cricket Board/Guyana and Trinidad Mutual inter-county cricket tournament and the general consensus is that he has come of age. As such much will be expected of him.

Another key player in the 14-man squad announced by the national youth selectors yesterday is Keon Joseph, a member of last year’s team.

Last year, Joseph was considered the fastest bowler in the competition and once fully fit the speedster should be a handful for the opposing batsmen.

Essequibian Royston Alkins has come on by leaps and bounds as an allround cricketer and it is not surprising that he has landed the vice-captaincy position.

Essequibo’s Herrel Greene who slammed a century during the trials and Trevon Griffith who had a fairly decent first outing last year are the opening batsmen.

Jeetendra Sookdeo and Foo should occupy the pivotal numbers three and four slots.
Guyana, who last won the regional title in 2007, will oppose the Leeward Islands from July 9-11 and Jamaica from July 13-15.

They then play the Windward Islands from July 17-19, Barbados from July 21-23 and Trinidad  and Tobago from July 25-27.

The 14-member squad reads: Herell Greene, Trevon Griffith, Jeetendra Sookdeo,  Jonathan Foo,  Royston Alkins (vice-captain), Anthony Bramble (Captain)

Seon Hetmyer, Alex Amsterdam, Totaram Bishun, Rajendra Nickbarran,  Rensford Beaton, Keon Joseph, Seon Daniels and Andre Stoll.

The manager is Alvin Johnson and the coach Hubern Evans.
There are six standbys in Anthony Adams, Amir Khan, Ryan Rajmangal,  Keron Fraser, Sahadeo Somai and Dexter Solomon.
