National Scrabble Champion Abigail McDonald with five wins and a cumulative spread of 287 won the Earl Vigilance Memorial Scrabble Tournament held Sunday at the Linden Economic Advancement Programme (LEAP) building in Mackenzie.
A total of 17 persons took part in the annual tournament held in honour of former scrabble player Earl Vigilance.
Lien holder Moen Gafoor suffered a huge loss against Leon Bellamy in his first game and finished in sixth position with a spread of -1. After the first round loss Gafoor found it difficult to get back into contention despite winning four games.
Gafoor said that on some days the game can go either way but a lot depends on the tiles one has.
“Sometimes it is down to what you put your hand in the bag and pull.”
Floyd Carmichael also had a good run with five wins and a cumulative spread of 124 to finish in second place. Carmichael was followed by Leon Bellamy with a cumulative spread of 579 and four wins.
McDonald said she was very pleased to have won the tournament although she had not played competitively since winning the title at the National Scrabble Championships.
The next scrabble tournament will be the CARICOM Day Open set for July 6 at the Malteenoes Sports Club.
This event which is an Open tournament, is expected to start at 10am.
