Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 22- year-old man at the Georgetown Public Hospital around 12:30 am yesterday from poisoning.
According to reports, Ian Williams, a father of one, of Lot 665 South Sophia was admitted to the public hospital around lunchtime on Tuesday after ingesting rat poison.
A sister of the man’s common law wife told Stabroek News yesterday that Williams once lived at his step-mother’s home in South Sophia but reportedly had to leave the house after encountering problems with his brothers and sisters. He then sought lodging at her home in North Ruimveldt. She said the young man once worked as a labourer but was recently retrenched and has since been searching for a job. The woman speculated that this may have led to him taking such a course of action.
She recounted that Williams asked for $100 and after leaving the home for a short period he returned and displayed a tablet to her. She said he then asked for some water, which he drank after swallowing half of the tablet. She said he and her sister then left her home during which the two began quarrelling.
However, Williams’s relatives gathered at the public hospital yesterday and related that the young man was not known to have displayed suicidal tendencies. The man’s cousin said that the police should investigate the circumstances surrounding his death since they allege the man sustained several wounds to his body including his face.
This newspaper understands that his wife was taken into police custody yesterday.
