Harty spins Jamaica to huge victory over Leewards

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC –  Left-arm spinner Patrick Harty bagged 7-59 to help the hosts rout the Leeward Islands by an innings and 38 runs in the TCL Group West Indies Under-19 Challenge yesterday.

Hardy’s wickets came from only 28.2 overs  as the Leewards were dismissed  for 166 in their second innings on the third and final day of the third round match at the Melbourne Oval.

He finished with 10 for 122.

Jamaica had taken a 204-run first innings lead, after Akeem Dewar scored 118 not out and the hosts declared on 471 for eight in their second innings about 45 minutes after the start.

Leewards captain Kjel Tyson was then the backbone of his side’s batting with eight fours in 64 off 171 balls in a little more than 3-1/4 hours.

But there was little substance and stability from the rest of the Leewards’ batting, apart from Tashmeade Mills with 33 and Akeem Saunders with 23, and the visitors folded meekly about an hour before the close.

Leg-spinner Akeem Dewar supported Harty with three for 35 from 15 overs to follow-up his four for 68 in the first innings.

Dewar had earlier completed a maiden West Indies youth championship hundred that included 11 fours from 288 balls in just over five hours of batting.

Walsh was the most successful Leewards bowler with three for 129 from 24 overs, and Yanick Leonard took two for 102 from 25 overs.
