Windwards gain first innings, force Leewards to follow on

Leewards were 77 for three in their second innings, after they were dismissed for 194, replying to Windwards’ first innings total of 457, on the second day of the fifth and final round match at Melbourne Oval.

Oscar George snapped up two wickets for 16 runs from six overs to put Leewards under early pressure batting a second time.

After Marvin Small had Leewards captain Kejel Tyson caught at second slip for 23, George stepped in to have Tashmael Mills caught in the same position for 14, and then trapped Yanick Leonard for four.

When stumps were drawn, Shernyl Burns was not out on 17 and Jahmar Hamilton was not out on 16. They have so far added 35 – unbroken – for the fourth wicket to stem the fall of wickets.

Windwards captain Dalton Polius had finished with three for 45 from 19 overs, and Kevin Hodge ended with three for 53 from 21 overs, as their side gained a 263-run, first innings lead.

Several Leewards batsmen got starts, but they all failed to carry on. They were Hayden Walsh Jr, whose 34 was the top score, as well Mills, Rahkeem Cornwall, and Kelbert Walters, who all scored 30.

Leewards were already swaying, when they reached 59 for two at lunch, after they had bowled out the Windwards earlier.

They gained an opening stand of 46, but Tyson was caught behind off John Fabian for 18, and Leonard was run out for 19 on the stroke of lunch.

After the interval, things started the same way they ended for Leewards before lunch, when they slumped to 63 for four.

Burns was caught at slip off Small for one, and Hamilton was lbw to Hodge for a duck, but the Leewards hardly recovered, and were 180 for seven at tea.

After tea, Windwards wasted little time in bringing the Leewards’ first innings to a close, and stuck them for another difficult period before the close.
