Barbados thwarted by batting as T&T win handsomely

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Barbados stumbled in their TCL Group West Indies One-Day Trophy Under-19 quest when they produced a mediocre batting performance to lose by seven wickets to Trinidad & Tobago yesterday.

Hoping for a win in the second round fixture to follow up their impressive opening round victory on Thursday, Barbados batted badly to be bowled out for 176 off 45 overs at Melbourne.

Their bowlers were then hard-pressed to defend the total as Trinidad & Tobago cruised to 178 for three off 43.1 overs.

T&T were led by openers Evin Lewis (47) and Nicholas Alexis (43) who featured in a second-wicket partnership of 76 which paved the way for their eventual victory.

The pair came together after wicketkeeper/batsman Aaron Alfred was dismissed for 12, caught by Kraigg Brathwaite in the covers off left-arm spinner Dario Cummins who opened the bowling with pacer Jason Holder.

Any other hopes of a quick breakthrough by the Barbadians were dashed as the duo consolidated, playing sensibly in the circumstances.

The left-handed Lewis faced 82 balls and struck four fours and two sixes while Alexis, returning to the team after being sidelined by injury, struck six fours off 97 balls.

After Lewis was dismissed in the 27th over, Yannic Cariah joined Alexis and the pair took the score to 116 before Alexis was unfortunately run out in the 31st over.
