In May, Minister Frank Anthony distributed some chess sets to a few schools and the federation is tasked with teaching the game to those, and other schools. It is important that the teachers with responsibility for games attend the training session on Saturday, so that they in turn can impart their knowledge to students. At the same time, the GCF will be looking to increase its financial membership by encouraging participants to become members of the federation.

The purpose of the workshop in the short term, is to have Essequibo participate in the National Schools Championship in December. At that forum, chess players from a wide number of schools will have an opportunity to compete against each other. The National Schools Chess Championship therefore provides an unparalleled platform for competition.

In the meantime, the DDL sponsored Emancipation chess tournament which began yesterday continues this morning from 10 am at the Keishar’s Sports Club in Hadfield St. The final four games of the tournament will be played today.
