Bandits strike at Skeldon camp

Four armed bandits attacked five workers attached to a contracting company in a camp in the Skeldon backdam about 8 pm on Sunday and robbed them of cash, cell phones and items belonging to the contractor valued $240,000.

Stabroek News learnt that the bandits, whose faces were covered with pieces of black cloth, entered the camp with a gun and three cutlasses and ordered the workers to hand over their personal items. The bandits stripped Rampoor, Corriverton residents, Bibi Gafoor, 22, a cook and Chandrawattie Samsundar, 18, of $2,000 and two cell phones valued $28,000. They also robbed three labourers, Godfrey Brijmohan, 17, Sumdat Singh, 17 and Akeem Thompson, 17 all of Number 65 Village, Corentyne of $4,000.

Police sources told this newspaper that as the men were leaving they picked up a Stihl chain saw, a two-inch water pump and three nippers.

The item belonged to the contractor, Garbaran Singh, called ‘Blacks,’ of Agriculture Road, Triumph, East Coast Demerara.

Reports are that the workers were chatting in the camp and got the scare of their lives when the men entered and pointed their weapons at them.

The bandits then escaped on foot farther down in the backlands.
