Guyana’s men’s squash team went under to Jamaica 2-3 but the women’s team whipped Bermuda 4-0 when the Caribbean squash championships continued on Thursday in the Cayman Islands.
The Guyana men’s team with three junior players in their line-up found the Jamaicans too experienced and went under despite two fine wins from Regan Pollard and Under-17 junior player Alexander Arjoon.
In the first match national junior player Raphael De Groot went under to Jamaican veteran Bruce Burrowes 11-9, 8-11, 7-11, and 7-11. However Guyana leveled the score with Arjoon’s fine win over Wayne Burrowes.
In his fourth senior tournament Arjoon was able to dispatch Burrowes 11-7, 11-8, 11-6.
This set the stage for the match between recently crowned Caribbean champion Chris Binne against top player Kristian Jeffrey.
Although he fought well, Jeffrey found the US-based Trinity College player a handful and succumbed 5-11, 5-11, 5-11.
It was then up to Oliver Downes to keep Guyana in the hunt but he lost to Andrew Dougal 10-12, 1-12, 4-11.
The final game between Pollard and Bruce Levy was a gem for the two players despite the fact that they were playing a dead rubber went at it. Pollard won the first game 11-6 but lost the second by a similar score.
Pollard fell a game behind when he lost the third game 10-12 but managed to squeeze out a 14-12 win in the fourth game to set up the decider which he won 11-9.
The Guyana women had no such problems and routed the Bermudans.
Victoria Arjoon squashed Michelle Turner 11-3, 11-2, 11-2; Kayle Jeffrey eased past Yvonne West 11-2, 11-2, 11-3, Nicolette Fernades toyed with Kim Morbey en route to a 11-7, 11-5, 11-3 win and Keisha Jeffrey crushed Amy Chan 11-4, 11-3, 11-1.
While the men are out of the top four the women will play Trinidad in the semi-final.
In the veterans competition Guyana went under to Barbados 2-3.
