GPF’s track and field c/ships climaxes today

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) 55th annual track and field championships will conclude today at the Guyana Police Force Sports Club ground at Eve Leary.

Organiser of the event Lyndon Wilson yesterday told Stabroek Sport that he was putting the final touches in place for what should be an exciting day of track and field races.

Wilson praised the overall organization of the championships which he described as “excellent.”
“I think it’s one of the best organized athletics championships and the only one to attract overseas athletes with its international flavour,” he said.

He added that he was not surprised at the turnout this year from the other Caribbean countries because of the current economic state in the Caribbean and the rest of the world. In previous years St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Antigua and Suriname attended the annual event.

“Despite the economic constraints Trinidad and Barbados were able to come out,” said Wilson.
Among the top performers expected to be on show today will be former national junior 100m champion Leota Bobb.
The 19-year-old Bobb now specialises in the 400m and will appear in Girls Youth Club 400m final.

Trevor Scotland is also one to watch appearing in the 200, 400 and 800m events while Mark Edwards of `B’ Division placed second to Scotland in the 800m.

The two are expected to go head-to-head in the 200m and 400m races later today.
Today’s is also the last day of the field events and the Shot putt champion will be decided.
There will also be a few novelty events which include the Tug-Of-War and races for Police Officers children.
The games will commence at 10:30am.
