KN pressmen murders PI

Magistrate Nigel Hawke yesterday deferred his ruling in the Preliminary Inquiry into the murders of the Kaieteur News pressmen to September 23.

Dwight Da Silva called `Whitey’, Quincy Evans called `Jimmy Dog’ and `Nasty-man’, a juvenile had been charged with the murders of five Kaieteur News pressmen – Chetram Persaud, Eion Wegman, Richard Stewart, Mark Maikoo and Shazeem Mohamed – which they allegedly committed in August 2006.

Jermaine `Skinny’ Charles, now deceased, had also been charged with the murders. All of the pressmen had been shot at the back of their heads.

Several witnesses gave testimony in the case which was previously before former magistrate Gordon Gilhuys, but it was later transferred to Magistrate Hawke.

Prosecutor Robert Tyndall at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday argued that sufficient evidence has been acquired to deem that a prima facie case has been made against one of the defendants, but not against the other. There was no mention about the case against ‘Nasty man’.

The prosecutor stated that he would not go into the details of the matter.
The magistrate then ordered that both Evans and Da Silva be further remanded to prison and that they appear in court on September 23 for his final rulings.
