Parfait Harmonie man stabbed, robbed

– residents call for lights, police patrols

A 24-year-old man, of Lot 3860,Parfait Harmonie, West Bank Demerara is recovering at the Male Open ward of the Georgetown Public Hospital from several stab wounds he sustained on Saturday evening when he was accosted by an assailant as he made his way home.

Suresh Persaud, a welder by profession, told Stabroek News from his hospital bed yesterday afternoon that he had just disembarked from a minibus around 7 pm on Saturday when he was attacked by an unknown man. He said the man held him at knifepoint and demanded all the valuables in his possession, including his fortnightly salary which he collected earlier that day.

As he complained about the dark streets leading to his home, Persaud stated that the man inflicted about six stab wounds to his body, after he, “put up a fight with him”.

The injured man said the ordeal lasted for several minutes following which he was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital by public-spirited citizens.

The father of one said the man may have planned the attack since he was the last person to disembark from the bus.

He displayed several wounds about his body including to his right shoulder, right elbow, abdomen and his back. He told Stabroek News that he was feeling much better than the previous day and called for the authorities to, “do something about the security condition”, at Parfait Harmonie.

The young man’s relatives, including his wife, told this newspaper that the community appeared to have many persons whose intention is to commit criminal acts.  They said a number of households had suffered at the hands of thieves over the past several months while many persons were robbed during the night in the area.

They called on the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) to place street lamps in the area since it becomes dark around six in the evenings and they also urged the police to ensure there are frequent patrols in the area, especially at night.The residents said many persons had approached the authorities on the issue of security but their cries seem to be falling on deaf ears.
