The student, whose record of indiscipline saw teachers at the Bishops’ High School sitting out from classes last Tuesday, has since been expelled from the school.
Stabroek News was reliably informed yesterday that following the action taken by teachers last week and intervention by the Guyana Teacher’s Union (GTU) the child was subsequently removed from the school.
Contacted yesterday about the issue relevant school officials refused to comment. However, Stabroek News had learnt from a source that the student had failed the same class twice and according to regulations governing the school that student should have been asked to leave the institution and seek a transfer to another school.
The parents of the student in question, the source had explained, were informed that their child could no longer attend the Bishops’ High for this reason.
Following the teachers’ decision to take action against what they described as a “brazen disregard for the rules” the Guyana Teachers Union had lent its support. President of the union Colwyn King, reports had said, condemned the disregard for rules governing the high school.
It is not clear whether the Ministry of Education intervened in the matter. This newspaper was unable to contact Education Minister Shaik Baksh for a comment with regard to the issue. Several educators from high schools around Georgetown have since opined that the Ministry of Education should put measures in place to address such issues.
“As an educator I am concerned about issues like these,” said a teacher who requested anonymity. “Take this issue at Bishops’ High for instance all that is being done here is the student is going to another school but nothing has been done to help that child. That child will take the same problems to another school and the same problem will occur again.”
