Man who escaped from lawful custody claims policewoman was slapping him at station

A twenty-one-year-old resident of Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, yesterday told the court that shortly after he was arrested he walked out of Alberttown Police Station because he was being assaulted by a female police officer.

Mark Bannister appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday

charged with escaping from lawful custody and was ordered by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson to pay a fine of $25,000 or spend six months in prison.

The facts of the case are that on September 3, Banister who was arrested and charged for unlawful wounding escaped from lawful custody.

He explained that he had a physical confrontation with a man and shortly after the police came and arrested him.

Banister stated, “De junkie deh hit me and I bore he pun he foot and de policewoman start slapping me cause is she family, suh I walk out de station and went home. But ah sorry.”

The prosecution stated that on the day of the incident the police from the Alberttown Police Station received a report of wounding made against Banister. As a result Banister was arrested by a policeman and taken to the police station, where he was placed in custody on a prisoner’s bench.

The prosecution said further that after a while Banister got up and ran out of the police station, making good his escape.

He was later apprehended by a policeman and taken back to the station.
