Palmyra man remanded over gunpoint robbery of neighbours

Vishaul Persaud, 20, of Lot 13 Palmyra Village, East Canje, Berbice was remanded to prison by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo following  two charges of robbery under arms committed on a fellow villager last Friday.

The defendant, who told the court that he was a carpenter, is alleged to have robbed his neighbour Bisram Singh and his wife Navita at gunpoint of gold jewellery  and cash amounting to $620,000.

Police Lance Corporal Roberto Figueira objected to Persaud’s pretrial liberty on the grounds that the offence is a serious one and the alleged victims had identified the defendant at the identification parade.

Police said the defendant was armed with a gun and was wearing a mask  when he robbed his neighbours but the victims had identified him by his voice as he was known to them.

The case is fixed for hearing on October 26.
