The mother of Marvin Smith, the 18-year-old who was murdered on October 8 this year, yesterday refuted statements made by the police on the character of her son.
Noreen Kennedy spoke out after reading a report headlined “‘Yankee’ remanded over ganja confrontation killing” in Thursday’s edition of Stabroek News. Quincy Rodney, 31, called `Yankee’ or `Que’ of Lot 530 West Ruimveldt was remanded to prison after he was charged with the murder of Smith.
Prosecutor Kevin London had stated that Smith was alleged to have been a ‘junkie’ and on October 5 he had gone into Rodney’s yard and was seen cutting up some marijuana.
Smith’s mother maintained that her son was a hard working young man who had secured a job at Edward B Beharry and Company Limited. She explained that he was looking for another job on the day that he was involved in the altercation that caused his death.
She said that her son was never seen cutting up marijuana in his alleged attacker’s yard as was stated by the police. The woman presented a police clearance to Stabroek News that she said deemed her son’s character as being clear of any encounters with the law. She said that in her time of grieving it is quite irresponsible of the police to make such a statement about her son when they knew nothing about him.
